Antonio Valencia will wear the iconic number 7 shirt for Manchester United during the 2012/13 season. The news leaves Valencia deserving credit for his remarkable rise after his move from Wigan three years ago, with the Ecuadorian becoming arguably our best and most consistent winger. Ecuador winger Valencia requested the shirt number – worn previously by United legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo – following the not-so-legendary Michael Owen’s departure this summer.
There had been calls from many fans alike for Valencia to be given the number 7 shirt and Fergie has answered them by deservedly rewarding Valencia for his efforts. Amongst all the players to have worn that shirt, Valencia has probably got the smallest ego of all of them and he’s also claimed to have had no hesitation in saying yes to wearing it next season. I personally can’t wait to see him action next season.
Elsewhere, announcements were made over the shirt numbers for our summer recruits; Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa will wear no.25 and no.26 respectively. The Reds’ remaining squad numbers for the 2012/13 season are yet to be confirmed so more changes may go ahead, hopefully we’ll have a few more players come the end of the transfer window to designate numbers to!
