Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez has completed his 6-month loan move to Wigan could make his debut on Saturday as the Latics take on Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round.

The Chilean international has outlined a desire to impress his temporary manager Roberto Martinez and hopes to thrive under the Spaniard’s progressive, attack-minded philosophy.

“I’m hoping to get first-team appearances in the Premier League and coming to Wigan will be a very good way to do that, particularly with the style that the gaffer has got the team playing in,” Henriquez told Wigan’s official website.

“Coming to the club is a very big opportunity for me and I am very grateful to Roberto Martinez because he has had the faith in what he has seen from me to bring me here.

“My job on the pitch is to score goals for the team and hopefully I can give the Wigan Athletic fans some good memories while I am here. I am available to play in the FA Cup against Bournemouth and I have been training hard to get my chance as soon as possible, I’m really excited to get going.”

Martinez, who has signed Henriquez to bolster his depleted forward line, says it is important for his new acquisition to acclimatise quickly.

“The fans will have the chance [in the FA Cup tie] to enjoy seeing the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes in helping our young players develop and see the potential they have,” the Spaniard told. “As well as that it will also be a chance for them to welcome new faces to the club, such as Angelo Henriquez and Roger Espinoza.

“It’s an important moment for them to be involved in the match preparation, the matchday environment and ensure that they adapt to our football club very quickly.

“Ideally both players would have more time to prepare and get used to their new team-mates, but they’re so desperate to play and at some stage we hope to see them on the pitch.”

Henriquez joined United from Universidad de Chile in September, bringing with him a reputation for lethal finishing, and has since scored on his senior international debut during a friendly against Serbia.

The teenager will wear the number 11 jersey at Wigan and help to fill the gap vacated by Arouna Kone, who is representing Ivory Coast at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a withering attack on Alan Pardew and Newcastle after the Manchester United manager was criticised for confronting referee Mike Dean during the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford.

Ferguson was furious that Dean overruled his assistant and allowed Jonny Evans’ own-goal to stand because Papiss Cisse, standing in an offside position, was not interfering with play.

Pardew criticised Ferguson afterwards but the United boss hit back this morning, accusing his opposite number of hypocrisy after he shoved a linesman in a match with Tottenham in August and branding Newcastle ‘a wee club in the north-east’.

Ferguson said: ‘Alan Pardew has come out and criticised me. Alan Pardew is the worst for haranguing referees. His whole staff, every game. He was at it the whole game on Wednesday.

‘He shoved a linesman and makes a joke of it, and then has the cheek to criticise me. Unbelievable. He forgets the help I gave him by the way,

‘The press have had a good field day out of it. They’ve addressed every avenue, the only one left is Barack Obama.

‘It’s because I’m the manager of the most famous club in the world. I’m not like Newcastle, a wee club in the north east, but that’s life.’

Ferguson defended his protestations to Dean and praised the referee for his handling of the incident in United’s 4-3 win. The referee did not include it in his report so Ferguson will not face any action from the FA.

‘There was no ranting and raving from me,’ he added. ‘I was demonstrative, but I’m always demonstrative. Everyone knows that, I’m an emotional guy. That isn’t to say I was abusive to the referee, I wasn’t.

‘Some managers shove linesmen on the pitch and make a joke. I’m not making a joke of this, it was serious decision and I think it should have been disallowed.

‘He was walking towards the tunnel and I shouted him over. He came over towards me and I came over towards him. I wasn’t on the pitch for more than three or four yards and then we walked together.

‘I thought the player was interfering with play, Mike didn’t think it was. He handled it well because he’s a mature, experienced referee.’

1. What an insane game. Easily one of the best Boxing Day games ever seen. United fell behind three times to a injury-ravaged Newcastle team, who lead for 54 minutes in total. But, United, as they’ve done all season, turned setback into comeback and got the winner in stoppage time to gain a crucial win to extend their lead at the top to 7 points after City lost at Sunderland. Merry Christmas indeed.

2. It was a blow to hear none of Rooney, Young or Welbeck were in the squad due to injuries and illness. It meant Scholes and Giggs started for the first time in over a month. It’s sad to see United fans jump on their back every time they’re named in the team or come on as a substitute. They’re in the squad till end of the season so of course they’ll be involved to some extent, especially during this festive period when games come thick and fast. Some people overreact to absurdity levels. Atleast, some common sense should’ve prevailed before this game when they were named in the team as both our left wingers Nani and Young were out injured, Anderson is injured, Cleverley played full game on Sunday and – given his injury record – it was understandable why Sir Alex opted against starting him twice in a week, esp with a much tougher game against West Brom coming 3 days later. Despite all this, there was unbelievable amount of criticism from our own fans towards our legend players. In the end, Scholes didn’t have the best of games but he didn’t do too badly either. He was substituted by Cleverley with 20 minutes to go. That sub turned out well in a manner that Carrick’s game improved immensely after that. Ryan Giggs, on the other hand, had a very good game, especially in the second period. Put in some good crosses that weren’t converted by Hernandez and Van Persie.

3. United had a very poor first half with barely any clear cut chance created except for Evans’ goal, which also was sort of a scruffy one. Perch gave Newcastle an early lead after Carrick mis-controlled a pass which allowed Ba to have a shot on goal. De Gea could’ve done better by parrying it out for a corner or a throw but he parried it straight at Perch who made a good run in the box. United responded through Evans, who just can’t stop scoring this season. He has become a big threat for us at set-pieces when he’s gone forward and his finish was a predatory one. Four goals already this season, and we’re only halfway through it!

4. The big talking point of the game was Newcastle’s second goal. It looked like an Evans’ own goal at first sight but linesman had his flag raised for offside. Replays showed he got it spot on given Cisse was interfering with play by getting hold of Evans. FIFA rule states clearly that a player is deemed offside if he is standing beyond the last defender and interfering with the play. Cisse wasn’t on the ball but the fact that he got hold of Evans’ meant he put him off a tad bit. That surely means he was offside and the goal shouldn’t have stood. But Mike Dean, being Mike Dean, ruled that the goal stands.

5. United started playing much better in the second half and got on level terms again through Patrice Evra, who – like Evans – has scored home and away against Newcastle this season and – like Evans – scored his 4th goal of the season. It’s incredible to think he’s scored more goals this season than he ever did for United before this season. He’s been an added threat at set-pieces for us like Evans and it’s shown. This time, though, he drilled a good shot from 20 yards out to level things up for United.

6. Defence was all over the place at times for us. Cisse and Ba caused havoc. As Newcastle played on the counter for much of the game and while we were chasing the game for most of it having gone behind earlier on, we were pretty much forward most of the time. This meant lot of exposed gaps in defence which was made even more difficult in those dreadful weather conditions. Even though United improved in 2nd half, Newcastle remained a threat and went ahead through an emphatic strike from Cisse, set-up by Obertan of all players. It wasn’t long before United responded and they did through Van Persie after Valencia crossed into the box. RVP’s first time shot was saved by Krul, who was immense in this fixture last season, but he couldn’t keep RVP’s shot the second time out.

7. The turning point of the game was Cleverley’s introduction. It increased the tempo of our plays and others including Carrick, Giggs, Valencia all came into the game. United created chance after chance from then on and missed some glorious chance to go forward when Van Persie and Hernandez some great chances to score. When United went all out attack in those final 20 minutes, it seemed like Valencia was back to his old self and he put in some fine çrosses into the box. I feel like it’s just confidence that’s lacking for him at the moment, nothing to do with fitness, just a mental thing. Those last 20 minutes would’ve surely helped. Another player who was magnificent on the night was Michael Carrick. He sprayed out some brilliant long range passes and he was the one who picked out a wonderful ball into the box for the winning goal which Hernandez finished off on the volley. I was glad Hernandez got that deciding goal or else he’d have been ripped apart by many for missing some very good chances. The way we were attacking in those final 20 minutes, that goal was always coming. It was a great finish for United to a great game at the end of a great day when we went 7 points clear at the top.

8. Although United came back to win the match once again as they have done all season, concerns still remain over the leaking goals in defence. United have now conceded more goals half way through this season than they did in the ENTIRE title-winning campaigns in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. It is staggering indeed and something has to be done quickly because there are going to be games when we won’t quite be able to make those comebacks when oppositions sit back after taking the lead. Games against Everton, Spurs and Norwich are prime examples of it. With Vidic finally back, we could only hope we cut out the sloppy goals and ensure we win games by a bigger margin that some of our attacking displays merit. Another game gone for now, United get the 3 points, halfway through the season and sitting prettily 7 points clear of City. We’d have all taken this scenario at the start of the season.

It was a great performance and most of it was down to superb tactics from Fergie. I said before the game we needed to have a go at them by going 442, like we did at Chelsea. It was the only thing that could’ve given us the chance of winning the game. We did just that. It was so pleasing to see. For the first time in quite a while, everybody was happy with the team news before kick off. That’s a rarity.

Van Persie may have been quiet except for the winning goal & chance hitting post earlier on, but his position for our 1st goal was great. He dragged Kompany out of position. That was key to that goal as it meant we counter attacked with their best defender not in position.

The 2nd goal was a carbon copy of the 2nd against Chelsea. Rafael ran past Hazard in that one, this time it was Silva. Meant that him & Valencia were 2-v-1 against Clichy, got the cross again like against Chelsea, b/w the legs of defender like with Ashley Cole & ditto type of finish for goal. This time it was Rooney on the end of it. This was turning out exactly how i was hoping it would when i was calling for us to go 4-4-2.

I think yesterday and the game against Chelsea sort of showed our recipe for setting up in tough away games in PL and also maybe for Europe. Carrick picks himself, and again had a solid game kept Yaya Toure quiet for most parts of the game really. Anderson and Cleverley are the other obvious picks for partnering Carrick.w

De Gea: Faultless. He won every aerial challenge or ball that he came out for. Pulled off incredible double save before City scored first. His distribution was brilliant. 8

Rafael: He had his best game this season. Got another assist and his link-up and understanding with Valencia is getting better and better. This partnership on the right wing is here to stay. 7

Ferdinand: He always turns up on big occasions. Was this ever in doubt? Oozed class and except for maybe that one showboating that resulted in loss of possession and possible goal for City n 2nd half, he had the perfect game you could ask for in such a difficult fixture. 8

Evans: Cleared every ball and was the first to every tackle until he went off injured. Last week was just a blip. He is improving and getting more and more solid. 7

Evra: Thought except for being caught once or twice in the game, he was great once again. So happy his form is back to what he was couple of seasons back. Had Nasri in his pocket all day long, was first to every tackle against him. 7

Carrick: Ran stride-by-stride with Yaya Toure and ensured he stayed quiet for the most of it. Compared to how he ran the show in this fixture last season, you could see how well Carrick did when you see the effect of Toure in both the games. 8

Cleverley: Worked tirelessly with Carrick and he provided the energy that would’ve been lacking had he not been fit. This was his best game since his debut when he had shackled Yaya in last season’s community shield. Toure has stayed quiet in both the games Cleverley has played. Hmmm… 7

Young: Best games this season from Young has come against Chelsea & City when we’ve counter attacked. Its no surprise as he’s a great player to have when counter attacking. That’s why he was so effective under Martin O’Neill at Villa as they played on the counter virtually all the time. 8

Valencia: Considering he hadn’t kicked a ball in 3 weeks, this was a damn good display. He gave us the width and even though he didn’t get too many crosses in, his runs at LBs puts opponents on the backfoot. That’s precisely what he did. Good link-up with Rafael. 7

Rooney: His best performance of the season and no surprise either. He’s always loved the big occasion and showed again why he still remains our most important player when it comes to making the team tick. Not just the goals, which were both well taken, he helped out immensely in defence too. The perfect game from a center forward you could possibly as for. 9

Van Persie: Might have had a quiet game bar the winning goal, which was utter bedlam!, and the shot that hit the post. He had a big role in the 1st goal and winning goal of course, just like he did in all the goals at Chelsea. His impact is immense. Incredible how him and Rooney have made us such a threat from set-pieces. If someone had told me last year we’d be a threat from set-pieces this season, I’d have laughed at you. We’re so lucky to have him. He’s bedded in seamlessly. 14 goals in 20 games is wonderful stuff. 8

Smalling: Fitted in seamlessly for Evans when he came on. Oozed perfection and composure. Perfect replacement for Rio. 8

Jones: He didn’t have much to do although he came on for Valencia who usually stood on the D during corners. Since he went off, there was no one there, resulting in Zabaleta’s goal. Not faulting Jones for not being there though. He was in the box to clear the header. 7

Welbeck: Did a great work in the 5 mins that he played. Won the ball off Clichy before the winning goal. 7

December is always an interesting month in the footballing calendar; often disrupted by frozen and snowy pitches, it’s the busiest time of the football year with fixtures coming thick and fast at the end of the month. In the past, the consistent matches have worked in favour of United and normally see United get some real momentum going into the New Year. With any form of real momentum proving hard to find so far this season, Ferguson feels that the upcoming Christmas period will be vital this season.

Speaking inside the new issue of InsideUnited that’s out on Wednesday night ahead of the Cluj game, Ferguson said “It’s generally a good month for us. We usually get ourselves to the New Year in a challenging position, and that’s where you want to be. When you have the second half of the season in front of you, you know full well that pressure can affect everyone, there’s no question about that. We tend to do not too badly.

Ferguson noted the hard start to the month, with the Manchester derby on Sunday, but said after that it’s not too bad at all. “The start of the month, with City away, is a hard one” he said. “But then we’ve got Sunderland, Reading, Swansea, West Brom – we’ve got a reasonable programme, so we should be expected to gather some points there.” With so many fixturs in a short period of time, Ferguson feels rotation is key and admitted he’ll sit down with Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen to decide what to do.

Similarly to last season, so far this term United have been hit hard with a succession of annoying injuries to key players. Although there’s no reason to believe our long history of bad injuries is going to improve, Ferguson saus he’s happy to have got some key players back in time for the busy period. “We’ve managed Rio Ferdinand very well. Rio is doing a lot of work throughout the week to get himself ready for games. If we can keep Chris Smalling and Phil Jones fit along with Rio and Jonny Evans – we’ll see how Nemanja Vidic gets on – we’ll have a far better chance.”

Speculation over Nani’s future at Manchester United boiled over considerably in the summer, with the Portugese winger coming close to an exit from United after talks were held with the rich Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg. According to some news outlets, Nani switched off his phone so that no contact could be made to try and tempt him away from Manchester, but other news outlets have said it was Nani’s ludicrously high demands that lead the deal to fall through.

It’s still unclear what the real reason behind Nani’s move to Russia falling through was, but with Nani’s high demands being the main hurdle in United’s attempts to secure a new contract with the winger you’d have to bank on the latter of the two. It seems as though the whole situation has got into a massive mess; Nani wanted to stay but United wouldn’t give him a very big contract, Ferguson was frustrated at Nani’s inconsistency, Nani seemingly wanted to leave but had no clubs willing to offer him a large enough pay packet, and now Ferguson is wary of playing Nani because he’d rather focus on developing the team in the long-term.

Many punters have suggested that, as a result of how close Nani came to leaving over summer, that a departure in the January window is very likely. It would be a bit of a rarity to see such a high-profile and talented player leave in January but it’s pretty clear that something isn’t right between Nani, Ferguson and the club. With Ferguson reporting earlier today that Nani will be out for at least 5 weeks, upon his return we’ll be a quarter of the way through the January transfer window and it could be that a deal could be done.

While I’ve been a big fan of Nani and want to keep our best players, he’s been far too inconsistent and, although it’s painful to think about it, I could well imagine that he’s played his last game for us. The argument here is that, even if he is inconsistent, on his day Nani is one of the best players in world and gets our team flowing. With the rising inflation rates in the footballer market, shifting Nani for a weak reported fee of around 15 million pounds would certainly seem like bad business for us.

Where will Nani go next? Maybe his first stop will be to have a bit of fun on the football games at Betfair online casino. Football Rules and Penalty Shoot Out should keep him entertained for some time while he finds a new club.
